Taking care of your Little Bear Knife
The flat grind is probably the most common grinding method for many different types of knives. It offers a good balance between a strong blade as well as cutting ability. Little Bear Knives are ground and sharpened so you can easily resharpen in the field. Yes, you can buy knives that are very sharp and keep an edge. But what happens when they dull in the field? Many of these knives require some very intensive sharpening techniques. Little Bear Knives come to you already very sharp. They are ground and sharpened at the correct angle so they can easily be touched up with the “Smith’s Two Step Knife Sharpener.” This saves you many headaches, especially those that find knife sharpening a challenge. If you are good at knife sharpening – Great! If not you can make and keep a razor edge with the “Work Sharp” system. Just carry the “Smith’s” with you in the field for easy touch ups.
Our knives are made to be used not sit on a shelf. The blades come with a beautiful satin finish that can be maintained with 300 to 500 grit sandpaper. A light coat of oil such as WD-40 (mineral, or olive oil if using for food preparation) will keep that new look. We can also give your knife the patina or antique look. Just let us know in the "Contact" section. Take care of your knife and it will last for the next generation. Our blades are made from 1095 high carbon steel. 1095 is not rust proof but surpasses stainless steel in many ways. It is strong, durable and versatile. It is much easier to sharpen and keep sharp. High carbon steel has a solid history of dependability. You can be part of craftsman ingenuity and skill. Our knives are tempered to 58 – 59 Rockwell. This gives an edge that is easy to make and maintain.
We offer many different handles. We especially like exotic hardwoods. We love the look, feel and durability. They are easily maintained with an occasional fresh coat of Tru-Oil (Birchwood Casey-Gun Stock Finish). Tru-Oil is easily obtained at Walmart. It gives a beautiful finish. Just follow the directions.
Our micarta handles are custom made by Little Bear Knives. You will not find these particular patterns anywhere else. Micarta is very durable. It withstands a lot of abuse and moisture. If you need to clean with soap and water, just coat with a little mineral or olive oil to reseal.
Each Little Bear Knife is individually hand crafted. We have a variety such as Bushcraft, Bird and Trout, Skinner's, Neck Knife, Chef Knives, Niswonger Chef / Camp Knife but each is uniquely different. Truly one of a kind. Not Production!
We also carry GLASS PLATENS. Tell us the size you need and we will cut to your order. We also have SAFETY SHELVES to use with the GLASS PLATENS the KNIFE MAKERS FILE GUIDES.
